Boulge Parish

The site of the demolished Boulge Hall lies in an isolated position close to the parish church. Fieldwalking finds suggest there was once settlement nearby, which is likely to have disappeared when a landscape park surrounding the house was created c. 1800, at a similar time to the building, or restoration and extension of the house. It sat in an oval-shaped garden enclosure with a connected walled garden. Major garden work took place at the end of the nineteenth century that swept away formal flowerbeds to be replaced by a terrace overlooking lawns with specimen trees down to a newly-created lake. Other features included tree walks, herbaceous borders and a ‘wilderness’. The Hall was demolished in 1955, much of the park was turned to arable, although many parkland trees survived. A new house has been built where the stables once stood, but the walled garden and basic shape of the garden enclosure survive.
